Buddy DeFranco Jazz Festival pays homage to namesake

Buddy DeFranco, who died Dec. 24, lent his name and talent to UM's jazz festival.

This year’s Buddy DeFranco Jazz Festival, March 26-27 at the University of Montana, pays tribute to “Our Buddy,” the jazz legend and festival namesake, who died Dec. 24. Expect fresh new arrangements of classic jazz tunes, original pieces, a guest appearance by jazz clarinetist Eddie Daniels on Friday, and other surprises.

Lance Boyd, former director of the UM Jazz Program, describes the pioneering bebop clarinetist as “a jazz giant.”

Boyd hired DeFranco to perform at the UM Jazz Festival in 1998, and afterward, the artist – who had a summer home in Whitefish for many years – inquired about becoming permanently associated with the festival and using his name in the festival title.

The Buddy DeFranco Jazz Festival debuted in April 2000, and according to Boyd, it was a very fertile alliance.

Irish Studies launches month of music, film and events

Thanks to our friends at the University of Montana’s Irish Studies program, Missoula is awash in Celtic-flavored events this month, including concerts by Irish fiddler James Kelly March 7 (and March 6 in Butte) and Liam O'Maonlai March 21 (March 20 in Butte). Lectures, films, a parade, banquet and auction celebrate Ireland's patron saint. Festivities culminate in raffle drawing for a trip for two to Ireland. Read more


Fun with Food: Alton Brown brings his Edible Inevitable Tour to Butte and Spokane

Renowned foodist and television personality Alton Brown visits Butte Feb. 28 and Spokane March 1 with The Edible Inevitable Tour. The Food Network star’s live show features a pinch of comedy, talk-show antics, a multimedia lecture, live music (he sings!) and a dash of “extreme” food experimentation and, of course, puppets. Brown encourages locals to tweet suggestions on coffee shops, restaurants, late-night snacks and sandwiches in the towns he’ll be visiting. Read more


Crown of the Continent Guitar Workshop announces line-up for 2015 festival

It’s show time for the Flathead Lake International Cinemafest

Hollywood has a long tradition of rolling out the red carpet for world premiere movies. Polson has brought that tradition to northwest Montana with its third annual Flathead Lake International Cinemafest, slated for Jan. 23-25 at the Showboat Cinema. FLIC, which was recognized as one of the top 15 Winter Film Festivals in the United States, offers full-length features, shorts, animation and documentaries, and a broad array of international films. Seeley Lake Winterfest offers three weekends of fun

Seeley Lake celebrates all that winter offers over three weekends, Jan. 17-Feb. 1, with the Wild West Winterfest. Weekend 1: Fun kicks off with the Driftriders’ Snow Ball, 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, in the Community Hall; and a 7 p.m. reading by Malcolm Brooks from his new book, Painted Horses, at Grizzly Claw Trading Company.
