Irish Studies launches month of music, film and events

Thanks to our friends at the University of Montana’s Irish Studies program, Missoula is awash in Celtic-flavored events this month. Here’s our round-up:

• A Springtime of Irish Music and Song, a series that brings traditional Irish performers to Butte and Missoula, offers concerts March 6 and 20 at Montana Tech Auditorium in Butte and March 7 and 21 at the UM Music Recital Hall:

James Kelly, considered one of the greatest Irish traditional fiddlers alive today, performs at 7:30 p.m. March 6 in Butte and March 7 in Missoula. He learned his music from his father, John Kelly, the renowned fiddle and concertina player from County Clare, and began his recording and touring career at age 16, the same year he won first place in the prestigious “Fiddler of the Year” competition and recorded his first album.

Fun with Food: Alton Brown brings his Edible Inevitable Tour to Butte and Spokane

Renowned foodist and television personality Alton Brown visits Butte Feb. 28 and Spokane March 1 with The Edible Inevitable Tour. The Food Network star’s live show features a pinch of comedy, talk-show antics, a multimedia lecture, live music (he sings!) and a dash of “extreme” food experimentation and, of course, puppets. Brown encourages locals to tweet suggestions on coffee shops, restaurants, late-night snacks and sandwiches in the towns he’ll be visiting. Read more


Crown of the Continent Guitar Workshop announces line-up for 2015 festival

Registration is now open to attend the sixth annual Crown of the Continent Guitar Workshop that will be held Aug. 30 through Sept. 6 at Flathead Lake Lodge in Bigfork. A professional staff of teaching musicians will be joined by 12 world-renowned guitar artists for this year's workshop, which focuses on 10 distinct guitar styles offering students a choice of which master artist they would like to learn from. It’s show time for the Flathead Lake International Cinemafest

Hollywood has a long tradition of rolling out the red carpet for world premiere movies. Polson has brought that tradition to northwest Montana with its third annual Flathead Lake International Cinemafest, slated for Jan. 23-25 at the Showboat Cinema. FLIC, which was recognized as one of the top 15 Winter Film Festivals in the United States, offers full-length features, shorts, animation and documentaries, and a broad array of international films. Seeley Lake Winterfest offers three weekends of fun

Seeley Lake celebrates all that winter offers over three weekends, Jan. 17-Feb. 1, with the Wild West Winterfest. Weekend 1: Fun kicks off with the Driftriders’ Snow Ball, 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, in the Community Hall; and a 7 p.m. reading by Malcolm Brooks from his new book, Painted Horses, at Grizzly Claw Trading Company. The Driftriders’ snowmobile poker run takes to the woods and backcountry trails at 9 a.m. Sunday. Read more


First Night: A celebration of art, place and the passage of time

Twenty-one years ago, Tom Benson harmonized with a quartet as part of the inaugural First Night Missoula. It was bitterly cold, he recalls, and their venue was overflowing with an appreciative crowd.
