A Discussion with Kate Hampton

Feb 9

Free

Kate Hampton, the director of the MTHS’s Montana African American Heritage Resources Project, will head up a discussion on the history of several Montana laws that affected how Black residents were able to participate in society. Since the establishment of Montana Territory in 1864 through the present day, Montana has enforced laws and policies designed to address sometimes to limit and sometimes to protect the rights of minority populations. State and local authorities codified and regulated discriminatory policies regarding members of the state’s Black, Native American, Chinese and Japanese communities. Hampton’s talk will provide an overview of some of those legal and regulatory acts that affected African Americans in particular.
