Mark-Making is an exhibition of visually ecstaticizing work by Great Falls artist Michael Sechena. The work on exhibit was created in Seattle and spans a 10-year period beginning in the mid 1980’s through the mid 1990’s.
This particular body of work, within the period of Sechena’s career, which began in the early 1970’s, carries the most significant weight as it relates to the maturity of his technique and the height of his exploration into post-modern thought and art making. The works on exhibit are comprised of various series that include color works and monochromatic works in black and white on large canvases and paper. Whirling, swirling and optically vibrating marks fall and rise out from the foreground and background of each picture.
This exhibition investigates the act of mark-making in Sechena’s work, which by definition creates form, substance, meaning, and is both product and process.
