Art works by Dana Aaberg, Valerie Amon, Susan Blackwood, Howard Friedland, John Garre, Justin Hsu, Tandy Miles Riddle and Joe Wayne are on display Nov. 1-24 in “The Human Figure in Art.”
According to C. David Swanson, the human figure in art has over the centuries been central and primary as a subject in paintings, especially sculpture. During the 20th century this changed. With the advent of abstraction in art and the eventual movement of Abstract Expressionism in Germany, spreading throughout Europe, and somewhat later, in America, in what became known as the New York School of Abstract Expressionism, the figure receded in importance, or became abstracted often to the point of near unrecognizability.
