Cohesion Dance Project presents the fourth annual Shira Greenberg’s “Nutcracker on the Rocks,” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27 at the Helena Civic Center Auditorium.
This unique community-based, rock ’n roll rendition of the traditional Nutcracker features the music of James Brown, Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin and more. Beginning with a few twists and turns during the more traditional first act, audiences are taken on thrilling journey through the decades in the second act, visiting the roaring flappers of the ’20s, a sock hop of the ’50s, and the flower power of the ’60s.
One exciting scene after another showcases a unique and energetic fusion of dancers and dance styles. The inspiring and inclusive Snow Scene highlights creative partnerships and collaborations between dancers of all abilities, including several with disabilities dancing from their wheelchairs or using other forms of assistance.
“Audiences often leave the show with smiles and tears of amazement glistening in their eyes over the distinctive way this production merges a variety of talents and abilities,” says Cohesion’s artist director Tanya Call.
“Nutcracker on the Rocks” is celebrating its 20th anniversary this season in its hometown of Albuquerque, NM, and Helena has the prestigious honor of being the only other location where this innovative production is performed.
With a record cast of nearly 75 community dancers, the 2016 performance features for the first time ever, talented local dancers Madi Kelly and Julynn Wilderson stepping in to lead roles alongside two visiting guest artists – Josiah Kauffman of Belgrade and Amber Moon Peterson of Portland.
