The Clay Studio of Missoula hosts its annual Holiday Open House from 2-6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14. The event includes free hands-on pottery lessons and other clay-related activities, live music by Steve Glueckert and friends, and refreshments. The studio also offers a free drawing for some fun and festive giveaways throughout the event.
The annual Holiday Sale and Exhibition, open through Dec. 22, features work by current and past Clay Studio resident artists, plus local and national artists. From a new mug to hold morning coffee, to vases for a bouquet of flowers, or sculptures to decorate the home or garden, the Clay Studio offers a variety of exceptional ceramic art. The studio, located at 1106 Hawthorne St., is open from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. daily through Dec. 22.
Clay Studio Workshops
The Clay Studio also offers a variety of workshops to lighten up the long winter ahead.
Wassail Clay Cup Workshop, 6-9 p.m. Jan. 5: Get ready for Western Cider’s Wassail celebration by creating an Old World clay cup using the pinch method in this informative workshop. Cup will be fired and ready before the big party on Jan. 18 at Western Cider ($30 per student)
Flower Catchers! Community Workshop, 2-5 p.m. Jan. 26: Create bud vases and posy prams for meaningful gift-giving and love tokens while exploring form and surface combinations ($25).
Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a participating adult for either session.
Beginning Pottery Workshops, 1-4 p.m. Saturdays, Jan. 25, Feb. 8, Feb. 22 or March 7: Curious about learning how to throw on a potter’s wheel? These one-day workshops offer an introduction to the basics behind centering clay and throwing a bowl and/or cylinder forms. Completed works will be fired and glazed by The Clay Studio of Missoula. Students can choose from a selection of shop slips, and should allow approximately 3-4 weeks for drying and firing of finished work. This class is for students with no, or very limited, wheel experience ($35 per class; open to ages 16 and over).
