Bigfork Summer Playhouse gets in the swing of things with "42nd Street"
The Bigfork Summer Playhouse’s 57th season of live professional theatre gets into full swing this month, with shows at 8 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays and Sunday matinees beginning in July.
“42nd Street,” June 4-Aug. 25, tells the story of a humble, naive young actress who auditions for a new Broadway musical, catches the eye of the famous director and becomes a star (after memorizing 25 pages, six songs and 10 dance numbers).
“Young Frankenstein,” June 7-Aug. 27, is a delightful musical parody of the horror film genre, especially the 1931 Universal Pictures adaptation of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” and its 1939 sequel, “Son of Frankenstein.” Watch as the grandson of Victor Frankenstein … “uh, that’s Fronk-en-steen!” tries to create life in Transylvania in this madcap musical.
“Shrek, The Musical,” June 21-Aug. 26, follows an unlikely hero and his loyal steed as they embark on a quest to rescue the beautiful (if slightly temperamental) princess from a fire breathing, love-sick dragon, aided by a gang of fairytale misfits and a biscuit with attitude.
“Church Basement Ladies” launched the season in May and continues through June 25; from the senior matriarch of the kitchen to the bride-to-be learning to arrange things in proper order, these humorous and down-to-earth characters are sure to seem familiar. Add a little romantic stir for the new pastor and the outcome is heavenly entertainment.
The duck-tailed, hot-rodding “Burger Palace Boys” and their gum-snapping, hip-shaking “Pink Ladies” evoke the look and sound of the 1950s in “Grease,” which opens July 5.
