Tragedy: A Tragedy
Raven’s Feather Productions invites audiences to experience something bold, strange, and darkly funny this spring with Tragedy: a tragedy by acclaimed playwright Will Eno. The production runs April 17 through May 3 at the Helena Avenue Theatre, with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.
At the heart of the play is a seemingly simple premise: a small local news team reports that the sun has set—perhaps for the final time. As the anchor checks in with correspondents scattered across their coverage area, they search for signs of catastrophe, urgency, or meaning. Yet what unfolds is not a dramatic apocalypse, but something quieter and more unsettling. The world does not explode into chaos; instead, it appears to slow, creaking uncertainly forward as if unsure whether it will continue at all.
Blending satire with absurdist humor, Tragedy: a tragedy reveals what happens when there is no clear story to tell. In the absence of breaking news, the reporters begin to drift, their personal thoughts and vulnerabilities seeping into their broadcasts. What emerges is both hilarious and deeply human—a reflection on uncertainty, communication, and the fragile structures we rely on to make sense of the world.
Will Eno, a Pulitzer Prize finalist and recipient of Obie, Drama Desk, and Lucille Lortel Awards, is widely recognized as one of today’s most inventive playwrights. Since its premiere at London’s Gate Theatre in 2001, Tragedy: a tragedy has captivated audiences with its sharp language and poignant exploration of the human condition.
This production features Kevin Skaalure as Frank in the Studio, Bil Shipley as John in the Field, Haley McKnight as Constance at the Home, LeRoy McKitrick as Michael, Legal Advisor, and Ben Schwabauer as The Witness. Direction is by Ross Nelson, with Mary Gegenhuben serving as stage manager.
