She first won worldwide acclaim in 1982 with the publication of her debut novel, “The House of the Spirits,” which began as a letter to her dying grandfather. Since then, she has authored 27 bestselling books, including “Of Love and Shadows,” “Eva Luna,” “Daughter of Fortune,” “Island Beneath the Sea,” “Paula,” “The Japanese Lover,” “A Long Petal of the Sea,” her most recent memoir, “The Soul of a Woman,” and her most recent novel, “The Wind Knows My Name.” Allende’s books have sold more than 77 million copies worldwide and have been translated into more than 40 languages.
