new abstract paintings by Bozeman-based artist Catherine Courtenaye are on display Aug. 1-Sept. 26. The artist's Avian Witness series references the movement of birds overlaid onto geometric fields.
The Montana Arts Council partially underwrote an accompanying catalogue, with an essay by Yellowstone Art Museum Curator Susan Floyd Barnett. "Courtenaye thinks of these paintings as aerial landscapes, fully aware that any nod to landscape painting today is complicated by the fraught relationship between natural and human habitat. In her recent work, elements of nature and culture intersect without melding," Barnett writes.
