Shane Doyle, educator and member of the Crow (Apsaalooke) Tribe, and John Zumpano, local photographer, give the final installment of the Yellowstone Gateway Museum’s fall speaker series, History that Matters: Anniversaries of 2018.
Doyle describes the details and history of the Crow Fair and highlights the history of the Crow Tribe, especially in Livingston and the surrounding area. He’ll also drum and sing a traditional song. Zumpano’s images document the Crow Fair through time, including images of tribal dances, rodeos, and parades.
Doyle is a Crow tribal member and educator who grew up in Crow Agency. A singer of Northern Plains tribal style of music for 30 years, he also holds a doctorate in curriculum and instruction, and completed a post-doctoral appointment in genetics with the University of Copenhagen, Denmark in 2016.
Zumpano is a freelance event, landscape and fine art photographer based in Livingston. A Butte native, he spent almost 30 years as a motion-picture technician. In 2006 Zumpano returned to Montana to live and since 1989 has documented the Crow Fair's dance, rodeo, and parades in Crow Agency.
