Film Screening: Almost Famous

May 2

The first film to be playing in our annual musical menagerie, Musical May, will be Cameron Crowe’s marvelous 2000 rock drama, Almost Famous, screening in celebration of the film’s 25th anniversary!
This excellent film is a time capsule of the turbulent 1970s rock culture as it shifts into a mainstream cultural juggernaut, starring a loaded cast portraying characters swept into the strange realities and misconceptions of show business! Almost Famous is not just a great play on 70s music, but is also a strong coming of age story that sees wayward young adults experimenting in the sea of sex, drugs, and rock n roll!
It’s 1973, and William Miller is a 15 year old aspiring journalist with an unabashed love for rock culture. When he manages to land a job as a journalist for Rolling Stone magazine, he is assigned to interview and document the tour of up-and-coming rock band Stillwater. On the road with the band, William is inevitably exposed to the explosive party life of 70s musicians, and he begins to partake in their parties, drugs, and intimacy while still being expected to deliver a story.
