in Journey to Abstraction, 26 regional artists explore modern art movements. The exhibit opens May 10 and continues through June 11, with a reception, 6-8 p.m. May 20.
From the Renaissance to the mid-19th century, Western art, bolstered by the logic of perspective, aimed to recreate the visible world in the most realistic way. By the end of the century, though, private, and public patronage spurred artistic independence, and many artists were searching for new ways to express the changes taking place in technology, science, and philosophy.
Over the next hundred years and beyond the sources and inspiration for individual artists have been diverse. Modern art movements -- from impressionism and post-impressionism to fauvism, through cubism and abstract expressionism -- have reflected the social and intellectual interests in all areas of Western culture of their time.
