This panel discussion will be moderated by Senior Curator Brandon Reintjes, featuring exhibiting artist Brian Maguire, writer Lucy Cotter, and scholar and activist Kathryn Shanley. Together, they will reflect on the issues and impacts behind Outrage.
This deeply moving exhibition honors the Indigenous lives lost to the MMIP crisis in Montana and reflects artist Brian Maguire’s longstanding commitment to amplifying humanitarian issues through art.
Created in collaboration with families impacted by the MMIP crisis and MMIP advocates across Montana’s tribal communities, Outrage is both a memorial and a call to action. Maguire’s portraits bear witness to grief, resilience, and the ongoing fight for justice.
For the past five years, Maguire has met with impacted families often in their homes or other chosen spaces, listening to their stories and respectfully requesting a photograph of their loved one. From each image, he creates two nearly identical portraits: one is gifted to the family, and the other is displayed publicly to raise awareness and honor those who are missing or whose lives were taken too soon.
