Join Baroque Music Montana’s Carrie Krause from Bozeman and Davina Clarke from London (violins), Lindsey Strand-Polyak of L.A. (viola), Sarah Stone from New York City (cello) and Bozeman-based composer and violinist Athena Carson in exploring the musical life of Sara Levy.
A favorite student of Johann Sebastian Bach’s son, as well as Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn’s great aunt, Sara Levy was at the center of Berlin’s musical life at the turn of the 19th century.
This program includes selections from the Bach family including “Art of Fugue” paired with a fugue by Bozeman composer Carson, a French battle piece about the Napoleonic Wars written during his occupation of Berlin, and Felix Mendelssohn’s Op. 80 String Quartet written in remembrance of his sister, Fanny.
Pieces are performed on period instruments and historical bows by musicians specialized in historical performance style, especially notable for the rarely heard lens towards Mendelssohn’s early romantic work.
