What’s in a name? For Jack Worthing, it’s his future happiness. The love of his life is incapable of returning such affection to someone named Jack. He therefore woos her under the assumed name of Ernest, hoping to someday resolve the predicament. Meanwhile, Jack’s best friend has fallen in love with someone who returns his affection under the assumption that he is also named Ernest. Should the friends both be rechristened with the same first name? Is there any way to convince the imperious Lady Bracknell to accept Jack as a son-in-law? Will there be enough cucumber sandwiches? The Importance of Being Earnest is Oscar Wilde’s comic romp through the foibles of “well-mannered” British aristocrats.
