Tragedy: a tragedy follows a small local news team which is reporting that the sun has set, possibly never to return. The anchor calls on each of the reporters, searching for signs of apocalypse, but the world does not seem to be ending with bang. It is perhaps, simply slowing, turning creakily on its axis for what may (or may not) be the last time.
Part satire, part absurdist comedy, what happens when the reporters do not have earth-shaking events to report is that their lives bleed through into their accounts of the world, exposing them to the viewers at home.
Will Eno is a Pulitzer finalist, and winner of an Obie, Drama Desk, and the Lucille Lortel Award, among other honors. Tragedy: a tragedy premiered at the Gate Theatre in London in 2001.
