Frights abound at the Moss Mansion this month, as the historic old home sets the mood for Halloween.
Murder Mystery Mayhem at the Moss, 6 p.m. Oct. 8, evokes the age of bootleggers, gangsters, and jazz with a Roaring ’20s theme that transforms the museum into a Speakeasy where mob bosses attempt to form an alliance to take over the city. The scandal begins as characters converge in a flurry of flappers, wing-tips, and zoot suits to enjoy a three-course dinner and a glass of wine. Suspense builds as a victim is discovered, clues are located throughout the mansion, and police question the suspects to prepare for the arrest of the murderer lurking in the midst. Tickets are $85 (available through Sept. 30) and include a character profile, costume suggestions, dinner, wine, and a fabulous time.
Don costumes and enjoy hors d’oeuvres, music and mingling with characters from the H.H. Holmes Murder Castle during Shocktails: “Fairytales and Frights,” 7-10 p.m. Oct. 15. Tarot readings and a cash bar are part of the evening. Tickets are $25 and include one drink ticket and admission to the Montana Paranormal Research Society Ghost Reveal (RSVP by Oct. 10).
Things get very eerie when the mansion is transformed into a haunted hotel with a skulking serial killer for Horror Theater: “H.H. Holmes, The Murder Castle,” 6:30-10 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays, Oct. 21-29, and Monday, Oct. 31. The Haunted Maze, open 7-10:30 p.m. offers tamer frights. Tickets are $15 for the castle tour; $8 for the maze; or $20 for both.
The Midnight Mansion Tour, open 11:30 p.m.-1 a.m. Oct. 28-29, offers 25-30 minute tours through the Murder Castle and up to the third floor ballroom, where few mortals dare to go … Only 60 tickets are available ($25); reservations required.
For a more benign experience, try the Trunks and Treasures Tour, 9:30 a.m. Oct. 8; open drawers, lift lids and get a behind-the-scenes look at this historic treasure and explore the third-floor ballroom ($25).
