The Alberta Bair Theater’s Broadway Series brings the Tony Award-winning Best Musical “Kinky Boots” to Billings Monday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m.

Produced by TROIKA Entertainment, the show features a Tony-winning score by Cyndi Lauper, with direction and choreography by Jerry Mitchell (“Legally Blond” and “Hairspray”). In addition to accruing a stack of six Tony Awards, the original Broadway cast recording won a Grammy.

Inspired by true events (and a 2005 film by the same title), “Kinky Boots” travels from a gentlemen’s shoe factory in Northampton to the glamorous catwalks of Milan. Charlie Price is struggling to live up to his father’s expectations and continue the family business of Price & Son. With the factory’s future hanging in the balance, help arrives in the unlikely but spectacular form of Lola, a fabulous performer in need of some sturdy new stilettos for herself, and her back-up singers, The Angels.

Rock star Lauper wrote the “love- and heat-seeking score” of 16 songs.

“The kicky crowd-pleaser ‘Kinky Boots’ is the very model of a modern major musical,” writes Time Out New York. “[Cyndi] Lauper is a musical-theater natural, combining bright, infectious melodies with simple but effective lyrics. The overall effect is nigh irresistible …”

Since its arrival on stage, “Kinky Boots” has won every major Best Musical award. The Broadway production is now in its sixth year; a London production won the Olivier Award; an Australian production opened in October 2016; and an production opened in Germany in 2017. Other previous productions include a past U.S. National Tour that played more than 80 cities, an award-winning extended run in Toronto, two productions in Korea, and a Japanese language production.

Tickets, $80 and $67, are available at the Alberta Bair Theater Box Office on the corner of Third Ave. N. and N. Broadway, by phone at 406-256-6052 or online at www.albertabairtheater.org.
