The Bozeman Symphony turns up the heat this fall with Bohemian Fire, a program celebrating unity, resilience and passion. Performances take place October 10 and 11, 2026, at Willson Auditorium in downtown Bozeman.
Music Director Norman Huynh leads the orchestra through three compelling works that connect generations and continents. Returning audience favorite Julian Schwarz joins the Symphony for the Montana premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s luminous Cello Concerto.
The evening begins with Valerie Coleman’s Umoja – Anthem of Unity. This powerful opening work celebrates community and togetherness, setting the stage for music that speaks to shared human experiences.
Next, Schwarz brings his rich tone and expressive artistry to Higdon’s concerto. His effortless virtuosity and broad palette of musical colors make him an exciting guide through this contemporary work.
Higdon shaped the concerto with Schwarz’s distinctive playing in mind. “Julian has an incredible sound,” she said, “and I really wanted to show off his playing.”
While preparing the piece, Higdon explored the cello’s repertoire, from Bach to Dvořák. Those masterpieces offered inspiration as she developed her own musical voice for the instrument.
Meanwhile, composer and soloist stayed connected by email throughout the creative process. Higdon welcomed that direct exchange, quipping, “That’s an advantage Beethoven never had!” Their collaboration adds a personal dimension to this anticipated Montana premiere.
Afterward, Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7 in D minor brings Bohemian Fire to a sweeping close. Dramatic intensity, lyrical passages and Czech character give the finale its emotional force.
