Books & Writers

Raven Publishing in Norris released two books by Montana authors in 2020: Rascals, Ruffians, and Rebels by Gary Forney and Our Trail Ends at Pony by Dixie Myhre.

Rascals, Ruffians, and RebelsProfiles from Early Montana

Gary Forney explores Montana history in Rascals, Ruffians, and Rebels.Seeking to preserve stories of how an eclectic cross-section of men and women pursued their dream of a better life, author and historian Gary Forney has compiled the stories of 12 early Montanans.

The Treasure State was peopled with many daring men and women: pioneers who risked their lives and futures to make this place their home. By 1863, with as word spread of gold discoveries, Montana became a collision point for people with different political beliefs, social and cultural customs, and languages, who all shared a common dream of striking it rich on the frontier.

These profiles present balanced and accurate stories of the lives of some famous, some infamous, and some barely known men and women, whose lives and influence still reverberate with those of us who call Montana home today.

Forney is the author of five previous non-fiction books and numerous articles on the Montana’s territorial period. He is a retired college administrator and has lived in Montana for more than 20 years.

Our Trail Ends at Pony

Our Trail Ends at Pony by Dixie Myhre recounts the family's many adventures in Montana. This true story spans the lives of Mike and Dixie Myhre from the days they were high-school sweethearts in Minot, ND, through their long-distance courtship during Mike’s years of service in the United States Marines, to their marriage.

It also encompasses the pursuit of a shared dream come true: buying a ranch in Montana and raising a family on it. Author Dixie Myhre has recorded memories of exciting and sometimes frightening episodes that took place throughout their days of building homes and buying and working ranches in North Dakota and throughout Montana. The story concludes at the couple’s current home near Pony, where they’ve retired after years of hard work, ranching, and raising three boys.
