Joining the symphony for Florence Price’s Piano Concerto in One Movement is Grammy Award–winning pianist Michelle Cann, one of the most sought-after artists of her generation. Praised for her artistry and expressive depth, Cann has performed with leading orchestras including the Chicago Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and The Cleveland Orchestra. She brings exceptional insight and musicality to the stage, captivating audiences with her powerful interpretations.

At the heart of the performance is Gershwin’s groundbreaking Rhapsody in Blue, a 1924 masterpiece that fuses classical form with the vibrant energy of jazz. Its sweeping melodies and syncopated rhythms helped define the Jazz Age while breaking down barriers between musical genres.

The program concludes spectacularly with Bernstein’s electrifying Symphonic Dances, which capture the drama and emotion of his Broadway hit West Side Story. Bernstein employs a dynamic blend of classical techniques, Latin influences, and jazz-inspired movement to tell this classic story of love and conflict in nine movements.

Grammy Award-winning composer Carolyn Shaw’s The Observatory rounds out the evening with a kaleidoscopic, filmic journey. Premiered by the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2019, the piece is named after the Griffith Observatory overlooking Los Angeles.

This carefully curated performance reflects the Bozeman Symphony’s commitment to showcasing both beloved classics and evolving voices. With its bold energy, emotional depth, and world-class talent, Sounds of America II stands as a vibrant tribute to the enduring spirit of American music.
