Characters in War of the Worlds
Anaconda Ensemble Theatre invites audiences to experience a classic tale of alien invasion when The War of the Worlds returns to the Montana Hotel. The chilling production launches AET’s fifth anniversary season with six October performances.
Founder and Artistic Director Jackie Vetter directs the show, which first helped launch the company in 2022. Now, AET revisits the suspenseful story that started its theatrical journey.
“I am excited to be revisiting this iconic story,” Vetter said.
A legendary broadcast comes alive
The stage play adapts the Mercury Theatre’s famous 1938 radio broadcast, itself based on H.G. Wells’ groundbreaking novel. Its realistic news-bulletin style convinced many listeners that Martians were invading Earth. That remarkable history gives the production an eerie edge that still resonates today.
Actor Steve Collins of Anaconda calls the story an ideal way to begin the Halloween season. Audiences can expect suspense, aliens, explosions and military action in an intimate historic setting.
Local talent takes the stage
Two casts bring together performers from Anaconda, Arlee, Bozeman, Butte and Divide. Several actors appeared in AET’s original 2022 production, including Heatherlynn Meeks. She said returning to the play offers a special chance to revisit familiar material while welcoming new ensemble members and their interpretations.
With its vintage radio roots, community cast and atmospheric venue, the show offers a memorable night of theater. Longtime fans and first-time visitors can celebrate AET’s milestone while enjoying a seasonal scare in Anaconda.
The War of the Worlds runs Oct. 2-4 and Oct. 9-11 at the Montana Hotel, 200 Main St. in Anaconda. Every performance begins at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for seating and access to a donation-only bar. The show lasts about 75 minutes with no intermission.
The production is recommended for ages 13 and older. It includes depictions of death, aliens, explosions, military activity and potentially disturbing imagery.
