Main stage of River City Roots Festival
Downtown Missoula will pulse with music, art and community spirit when the River City Roots Festival returns August 21–22, 2026. Produced by the Downtown Missoula Partnership, this free, two-day celebration draws more than 15,000 people to the heart of the city. Recognized as Montana’s 2009 Tourism Event of the Year, Roots Fest remains one of Western Montana’s essential summer traditions.
The main stage on West Main Street offers a lively soundtrack from afternoon through night. Friday’s bill ranges from young performers in Z.A.C.C. Rock Camp Bands and Tangled Tones to Joan Zen, Reverend Slanky, Amanda Shaw and headliner Honey Island Swamp Band. Saturday brings Cowboy Andy & the Salamanders, The Unfaithful Servants, Andy Dunnigan & Friends, Silas Herman & the Tone Unit and a closing set from The Infamous Stringdusters.
Roots Fest reaches well beyond the stage. The juried art show, open Friday noon–7 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.–7 p.m., showcases local and regional pottery, paintings, jewelry, leather goods, prints and wearable art. Nearby, the food court serves flavors from around Western Montana until 10 p.m. both nights. Downtown businesses join the celebration with the Support Our Roots Sidewalk Sale, running August 21–23.
Families can head to Caras Park from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Saturday for activities, community organizations and the Double Bubble Dance Party with DJ Coach Shane. Earlier that morning, runners take on the 4-Mile Roots Run, beginning at 8:30 a.m. on East Main and finishing in Caras Park.
The festival pairs celebration with environmental care. Zero-waste food service, composting and recycling stations, reusable cups, free water refills, bicycle valet parking and carbon offsets for the main stage help shrink its footprint. Visitors can make a greener trip downtown by walking, biking or riding Missoula’s zero-fare Mountain Line buses.
