In this weekend workshop, Richard Notkin introduces participants to hands-on activities, demonstrations and illustrated lectures covering the technical and aesthetic knowledge he has gained during his 55 years working in clay. Techniques and topics include small-scale clay sculpting, surface approaches to detail, texture and trompe l’oeil effects, plaster-mixing basics and detailed press molds, relief tiles and mural construction, narrative imagery, social/political themes, impactful commentary and more. Discussions focus on issues such as developing a unique personal aesthetic philosophy and approach to art-making in a rapidly changing world and participant input, concerns and questions. This is an energetic, information-packed workshop from an experienced studio artist who has conducted over 350 workshops and artist residencies throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Middle East since the 1970s.
