Learn about what happens inside an atmospheric firing like the soda kiln, and focus on using form, line quality, and surface treatment to develop unique surfaces in these atmospheric firings.
This class will discuss how to use the surface and shape of created pots to make the best of unique firings like soda, where a mineral atmosphere is sprayed into the kiln at high temperature, creating unique and beautiful effects on glazes such as flashing, color variation, and more! This class will focus on firing the soda kiln to learn more about the firing process and see how this unique method will make class creations shine, but will also discuss how these methods can be useful for other atmospheric firings like wood firing. Great for makers comfortable with making basic pots who are ready to up their game in terms of surface, and are interested in the use of unique glaze and texture instead of drawn imagery. Atmospheric firing is a great way to add beautiful, unique glaze decoration to pottery without the need to draw onto forms.
This class is for intermediate to advanced level students looking to further refine their work to make the most of atmospheric firing methods.
Included in class fee: First bag of clay, all firing fees for work created in all classes are included in the class fee (size limit- items must not measure more than 20” in any direction), access to work in studio outside of class meeting time.
